Vice President Kamala Harris (D) claimed, "nobody should have to go to jail for consuming weed," on "Late Night with Seth Meyers" last Monday. This statement was made less than a week after President Joe Biden (D) pardoned all federal cannabis possession convictions.

While "not that many people are affected" by the federal pardon—roughly 6,500 citizens, according to a National Public Radio review—Meyers asserted during the interview with Harris, a former prosecutor, that the action nonetheless represents "such a big step in the right direction" for federal cannabis policy.

According to the Mercury News, Harris handled the prosecution of more than 1,900 cannabis convictions while serving as San Francisco's district attorney from 2004 to 2010. The Marijuana arrests in the city, the figures reveal that "prosecutors appear to have convicted persons on Cannabis charges at a higher rate than under her predecessor."

Harris stated that she supported the legalization of cannabis on a federal level during her 2020 presidential campaign.
