Too Hot for Your Pot

I once left a bag of cannabis gummies in the center console while running what I thought would be a quick summer errand.


It was not a quick errand.


When I returned, the individual gummies had surrendered their independence and formed one large, sticky republic. The colors had merged. The shapes were gone. The carefully measured servings had become a single fruit-flavored question mark.


Was the THC still in there? Probably.


Was I going to cut the gummy blob into what I hoped were equal doses with a butter knife?

Absolutely not.


That melted mess taught me an important lesson: cannabis does not enjoy summer nearly as much as cannabis consumers do.


Flower dries out. Concentrates change consistency. Gummies melt. Cartridges leak. Beverages separate. Batteries can overheat. Even products that still look usable may no longer taste, perform or dose the way the manufacturer intended.


Your vehicle may have cup holders, storage compartments and a locking glove box. During July, however, it is also a small greenhouse parked on blacktop.


Your pot deserves better.


Your Car Is an Oven With Seat Belts


A parked vehicle heats up much faster than many people realize.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the interior temperature of a vehicle can rise about 20 degrees in as little as 10 minutes. Cracking the windows or parking in the shade does surprisingly little to stop that buildup.


Imagine leaving a cartridge in a car when it is 90 degrees outside. Before you finish grocery shopping, the interior may already be well over 100 degrees. Leave it through lunch, and your cannabis may be spending the afternoon in temperatures closer to a low-temperature cooking appliance than a storage cabinet.


Not every product exposed to heat instantly becomes dangerous or completely ineffective. Damage depends on the product, packaging, temperature and length of exposure.


But high heat can accelerate chemical changes, evaporate aromatic compounds, soften oils, damage textures and create problems with electronic devices.


In other words, the car is for transporting cannabis when state law allows it. It is not a long-term storage facility.


Flower: From Fresh Bud to Yard Clippings


Good flower contains a delicate combination of cannabinoids, terpenes, moisture and plant material.

Heat interferes with that balance.


Cannabinoids naturally change over time, and higher temperatures can speed up their degradation. THC can gradually oxidize into compounds such as CBN. That does not mean a hot afternoon will instantly erase all potency, but repeated exposure to heat, oxygen and light can make flower age faster.


Terpenes are especially vulnerable.


These aromatic compounds help give different cultivars their citrus, pine, floral, fuel or fruit notes. They are volatile by nature, meaning they can evaporate. Heat encourages that process.


Flower that once smelled like lemon peel and fresh pine may eventually smell like the inside of an old paper bag.


Heat can also pull moisture from the buds. Overdried flower becomes brittle, harsh and crumbly. Trichomes can break away more easily, and the smoking experience may feel hotter and less flavorful.


I have opened jars that should have smelled like a dispensary and instead smelled like somebody mowed the lawn three weeks earlier.


That is not always the grower’s fault. Sometimes the flower simply spent too much time in a hot delivery truck, on a sunny windowsill or inside someone’s vehicle.


How to store flower


Keep flower in an airtight container in a cool, dark, climate-controlled location. Glass jars work well when they are stored away from direct light. Opaque containers provide additional protection.


A humidity-control pack made for cannabis can help maintain a stable environment, but it should not be used to rescue flower that has already become moldy or excessively wet.


Do not place orange peels, bread or wet paper towels in the jar. That old trick may add moisture, but it can also introduce mold and microorganisms. Your flower does not need a snack.


Routine refrigerator storage is usually unnecessary for everyday flower and can create humidity swings or condensation when the container is repeatedly opened. Freezing may also make delicate trichomes easier to knock loose.


For most consumers, a dark cabinet inside an air-conditioned home is a much better choice.


Concentrates: When Shatter Becomes Taffy


Concentrates respond to heat in dramatic ways.


Shatter may soften, fold or turn sticky. Wax and badder can lose their intended texture. Rosin may become oily or separate. Terpene-rich extracts can become runnier as temperature rises.


This does not necessarily mean the cannabinoids have disappeared. The more immediate problem is that the product may become difficult to handle, measure and enjoy.


A dab that once broke cleanly from a sheet of shatter may stretch across the room like mozzarella on a slice of pizza.


Heat can also cause terpenes to evaporate and encourage oxidation. With enough exposure, the concentrate may darken, lose aroma or develop an altered flavor.


Products such as live resin and live rosin are often purchased specifically because of their terpene profiles. Leaving them in a hot vehicle defeats much of the reason for paying a premium.


How to store concentrates


Keep concentrates tightly sealed in their original containers and protected from light.


Some products are stable in a cool cabinet. Others, particularly terpene-rich extracts and solventless concentrates, may benefit from refrigeration. Follow the producer’s storage instructions whenever they are available.


When removing a refrigerated concentrate, allow the sealed container to approach room temperature before opening it. Opening a very cold container in warm, humid air can introduce condensation.

Water and dabs do not make a great summer romance.


Store containers upright whenever possible. This is especially important for products that may soften or become liquid at warmer temperatures.


Gummies: One Serving Becomes All the Servings


Gummies do not need extreme heat to begin losing their shape.


Different formulas use gelatin, pectin, sugar, starches, oils and coatings that respond differently to temperature. Some become soft and sticky. Others sweat, leak oil, crystallize or fuse together.


A melted gummy may still contain cannabinoids, but once several pieces have blended into one mass, the original dose may no longer be evenly divided.


Suppose a package contains ten gummies at 10 milligrams each. After melting together and resolidifying, cutting the blob into ten visually equal pieces does not guarantee that each piece contains exactly 10 milligrams.


One chunk could be mild. The next could rearrange your afternoon.


This is especially important for medical patients and low-dose consumers who rely on consistency.

Chocolate edibles face similar problems. Cocoa butter melts easily, and heat can cause chocolate to soften, separate or develop a pale, streaky appearance called bloom. Bloom is not automatically dangerous, but it signals that the product’s texture and structure have changed.


How to store edibles


Keep gummies and chocolates in their original child-resistant packaging in a cool, dry place.

Do not transfer them into ordinary candy bags or food containers. Besides losing the label and dosing information, unlabeled cannabis candy creates an obvious risk for children, guests and anyone searching the kitchen for a midnight snack.


Refrigeration may help some products during extreme summer heat, but check the package first. Moisture and condensation can affect sugar coatings, texture and shelf life.


If an edible has melted badly, leaked through its packaging, changed color, developed an unusual smell or been exposed to contamination, replacing it is safer than attempting gummy surgery.


Cartridges: Heat Makes Oil Travel


Cannabis oil is sensitive to temperature because its viscosity changes.


When oil gets warm, it becomes thinner and flows more easily. Inside a cartridge, that thinner oil may move into places it was not intended to go.


It can flood the heating chamber, leak from the bottom, enter the airway or work its way toward the mouthpiece. When the cartridge cools again, the oil may thicken in those areas and create clogs.

That is why a cartridge left in a hot car can later gurgle, spit, clog or deliver the deeply unpleasant experience of warm oil reaching your lips.


Nothing says “summer memories” quite like trying to clean distillate out of a cup holder with a gas-station napkin.


Heat, light and oxygen may also change the oil over time. The color can darken, the terpene profile can fade and the flavor may become harsher.


Then there is the battery.


Many vape batteries use lithium-ion cells. Extreme heat can damage batteries and increase the risk of malfunction. The FDA specifically advises consumers not to leave vape devices in direct sunlight or in a hot vehicle.


A leaking cartridge is annoying. A damaged battery is a safety issue.


How to store cartridges


Store cartridges upright with the mouthpiece facing up. Keep them in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight.


When possible, detach the cartridge from the battery during storage. Use the protective caps that came with the product, and keep the connection points clean.


Do not charge a battery while it is extremely hot. Allow a device brought in from a hot vehicle to return to normal room temperature before using or charging it.


If a battery looks swollen, damaged or unusually hot, stop using it. Do not puncture it, crush it or toss it loose into household trash.


And if a cartridge has leaked heavily, cracked or changed dramatically in appearance or smell, replacing it is wiser than attempting to vape whatever remains.


Infused Beverages: Keep the Buzz in the Beverage


Cannabinoids do not naturally mix well with water. Beverage manufacturers use emulsions and other technologies to disperse tiny droplets of cannabis oil throughout a drink.


A properly made beverage is designed to maintain an even dose from the first sip to the last.

Heat can challenge that stability.


High temperatures may accelerate oxidation, affect flavor, reduce carbonation and stress the emulsion. Ingredients can separate, settle or interact with the packaging. In a poorly stabilized drink, the cannabinoids may no longer remain evenly distributed.


That does not mean every warm can has suddenly become useless. Commercial beverages are normally tested for shelf stability, and storage requirements differ by brand.


It does mean that leaving a case of infused seltzer in the trunk for several days is a bad experiment.

Heat may also increase pressure inside carbonated cans or bottles. Freezing creates another problem because expanding liquid can damage or rupture the container.


How to store infused beverages

Read the label.


Some drinks are shelf-stable before opening and only require a cool, dark location. Others should remain refrigerated. Most opened beverages should be refrigerated and consumed within the period listed by the manufacturer.


Do not store cans in direct sunlight, a hot vehicle or an outdoor cooler after the ice has melted and the cooler has turned into a lukewarm bathtub.


Avoid freezing beverages unless the manufacturer specifically says it is acceptable.


Do not consume a drink from a bulging, badly dented, leaking or damaged container. If the contents look unusually separated, smell wrong or behave differently from previous cans of the same product, contact the manufacturer or retailer.


Can a Heat-Damaged Product Be Saved?

Sometimes.


Slightly warm flower that was exposed for a short time may be fine after returning to a stable environment. A softened concentrate may regain some of its original consistency when cooled. A gummy that became a little tacky inside an intact package may still be usable.


But cooling a product does not reverse every chemical change caused by heat.


Lost terpenes do not climb back into the jar. Oxidation does not run backward. A leaking cartridge does not repair its seals because you placed it near an air conditioner.


Use common sense.


Check the packaging. Look for leaks, cracks, swelling, discoloration, unexpected separation, strange odors and major texture changes. When accurate dosing matters, do not gamble on a product that has melted into an unmeasurable mass.


When in doubt, contact the licensed manufacturer or dispensary and provide the batch information from the package.


The Summer Storage Checklist


Before leaving the house, remember a few basic rules:

  • Keep cannabis out of parked vehicles whenever possible.

  • Store products in their original labeled and child-resistant packaging.

  • Protect cannabis from heat, direct sunlight, air and moisture.

  • Keep flower and concentrates tightly sealed.

  • Store cartridges upright and away from extreme temperatures.

  • Follow refrigeration directions on concentrates and beverages.

  • Never leave cannabis where children or pets can reach it.

  • Do not use damaged batteries, cracked cartridges or bulging beverage containers.

  • Never drive while impaired.


A small insulated bag can help during lawful transportation, but do not place loose products directly against melting ice. Water, labels, electronics and cannabis packaging do not always cooperate.

The best policy is still simple: take the product inside with you.


Keep Your Pot Out of the Hot


Summer is hard on nearly everything.


Lip balm melts. Phones overheat. Groceries wilt. Steering wheels become medieval torture devices. Cannabis is not magically exempt because it came in expensive packaging.


Treat it like the carefully manufactured product it is.


Keep it cool. Keep it dark. Keep it sealed. Read the label. Bring it inside.


Otherwise, your premium flower may become expensive mulch, your cartridge may empty itself into your purse and your ten-pack of gummies may become one heroic 100-milligram bear.


That is far too much responsibility for one bear.
