Cannascience: Cannabinoids and the Central Nervous System: Let's Get to Repairing

The human nervous system is one of the most remarkable healing systems in the body. Every thought, movement, memory, heartbeat, emotion, and sensation depends upon healthy communication between billions of nerve cells called neurons. These neurons communicate through electrical impulses and chemical messengers known as neurotransmitters, creating an intricate network that allows every organ and tissue to function in harmony.
The nervous system is divided into two primary sections. The Central Nervous System (CNS) consists of the brain and spinal cord, acting as the body's command center. The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) includes the network of nerves that branch throughout the body, connecting the brain and spinal cord to every muscle, gland, and organ.
When these systems function properly, the body maintains balance and resilience. When they become damaged, inflammation and dysfunction can affect nearly every aspect of health.
One of the most exciting areas of modern research is the role cannabis cultivars may play in supporting nervous system health through the Endocannabinoid System, a master regulatory system that helps maintain homeostasis throughout the body.
What Damages the Nervous System?
Central nervous system disorders develop for many different reasons. Injury, chronic stress, infections, autoimmune conditions, reduced blood flow, nutritional deficiencies, environmental toxins, genetic disorders, tumors, and age related degeneration can all contribute to damage within the brain and spinal cord.
Long term inflammation often becomes the common thread linking many neurological conditions. As inflammation persists, communication between neurons becomes less efficient and protective cells within the brain may become overactive, leading to additional damage.
While every condition is unique, supporting the body's natural healing mechanisms through nutrition, stress reduction, movement, meditation, quality sleep, medicinal herbs, and cannabis therapy may help improve overall neurological health.
Conditions That Affect the Central Nervous System
Central nervous system disorders include a wide range of conditions, including:
Multiple sclerosis
Epilepsy and seizure disorders
Parkinson's disease
Alzheimer's disease and dementia
Neuropathy
Stroke
Brain injuries
Anxiety disorders
Depression
Autoimmune neurological disorders
Chronic pain syndromes
Although each condition presents differently, they often share common characteristics including inflammation, oxidative stress, and disruption of healthy nerve communication.
Common Symptoms
Symptoms vary depending upon the condition but may include:
Chronic fatigue
Headaches
Brain fog
Memory loss
Difficulty concentrating
Anxiety
Depression
Muscle weakness
Tingling or numbness
Tremors
Loss of coordination
Vision changes
Chronic pain
Sleep disturbances
These symptoms remind us that the nervous system is interconnected with every organ and system throughout the body.
The Endocannabinoid System and Nervous System Health
One of the body's most fascinating regulatory systems is the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). This system helps regulate mood, sleep, pain perception, memory, appetite, immune function, inflammation, and overall balance.
The body naturally produces its own cannabinoids called endocannabinoids. Two of the most studied are anandamideand 2 AG.
Anandamide is often referred to as the "bliss molecule" because it plays an important role in mood, motivation, stress response, and emotional well being. Normally, an enzyme called Fatty Acid Amide Hydrolase (FAAH) breaks down anandamide after it has completed its work.
Research suggests that cannabidiol (CBD) may slow the activity of FAAH, allowing the body to maintain healthy levels of anandamide for a longer period of time. This may help support emotional balance, nervous system resilience, and healthy stress responses.
CBD also influences numerous receptors throughout the body without strongly binding to CB1 receptors the way THC does. Instead, CBD works through multiple pathways, contributing to what researchers now recognize as a broad regulatory effect on inflammation, immune signaling, neurotransmitter activity, and cellular protection.
This is where the concept of molecular synergy becomes so important. Rather than relying upon a single cannabinoid, the hundreds of naturally occurring compounds found within whole plant cannabis cultivars often work together to support the body's own healing mechanisms.
Cannabis and Neuroprotection
One of the most promising areas of cannabinoid research involves neuroprotection.
Studies continue to investigate how cannabinoids may help:
Reduce oxidative stress
Calm excessive inflammation
Protect neurons from injury
Support healthy immune function
Encourage healthy communication between nerve cells
Promote overall nervous system balance
Researchers are also exploring the potential role cannabinoids may play in supporting individuals living with neurodegenerative diseases, neuropathic pain, traumatic brain injury, and autoimmune neurological disorders. While much remains to be learned, the growing body of evidence is encouraging.
CBD and Daily Function
Unlike THC, CBD does not produce the intoxicating effects commonly associated with cannabis. Many individuals choose CBD rich cannabis cultivars because they may provide support while allowing them to remain focused throughout the day.
As a Cannabis Therapy Consultant, I always remind clients that dosage is highly individualized. Factors such as body weight, metabolism, health conditions, medications, and cannabinoid sensitivity all influence what amount may be appropriate.
Rather than following a one size fits all approach, begin low, increase slowly, and work with a knowledgeable healthcare provider experienced in cannabinoid medicine.
Nourishing the Nervous System Naturally
Cannabis therapy is only one piece of the healing puzzle.
Supporting the nervous system requires a nutrient dense diet rich in minerals, healthy fats, antioxidants, and amino acids.
Foods rich in magnesium are particularly important because magnesium helps regulate nerve transmission, muscle relaxation, sleep quality, and stress response.
Excellent sources include:
Dark chocolate with high cocoa content
Spinach
Swiss chard
Kale
Avocados
Bananas
Almonds
Cashews
Walnuts
Pumpkin seeds
Sesame seeds
Lentils
Peas
Brown rice
Oats
Millet
Winter squash
Bone broth made from pasture raised poultry
Healthy fats are equally important for maintaining the protective covering surrounding nerve cells.
Include foods rich in Omega 3 fatty acids such as:
Wild salmon
Sardines
Chia seeds
Flaxseed
Hemp seed
Walnuts
Medicinal Plants That Complement Cannabis
Several traditional herbs have been used for generations to calm the nervous system and may work beautifully alongside cannabis therapy.
My favorites include:
Lemon Balm
Passionflower
Lavender
Holy Basil
Ginkgo biloba
Chamomile
Skullcap
Ashwagandha
These herbs may be enjoyed as teas, tinctures, glycerites, or incorporated into evening wellness routines.
Supporting Brain Function
Healthy cognition includes memory, learning, concentration, reasoning, creativity, and decision making.
Foods that nourish the brain include:
Blueberries
Spinach
Dark leafy greens
Garlic
Olive oil
Walnuts
Cocoa
Green tea
Whole grains
Avocados
Organic berries
Turmeric
Omega 3 rich foods
Combined with quality sleep, meditation, exercise, sunlight, hydration, and meaningful social connection, these foods help create an environment where the nervous system can thrive.
Making Your Own CBD Infused Olive Oil
Creating your own whole plant infused oil is one of my favorite ways to honor the medicine of the cannabis plant.
Using organically grown CBD rich cannabis cultivars and a high quality extra virgin olive oil allows you to produce a beautiful topical oil with minimal processing.
Gently warming the plant material in olive oil using a water bath over several hours extracts many of the beneficial plant compounds while preserving delicate constituents. After straining, store the finished oil in a dark glass container in a cool location.
This infused oil may be used for massage, sore muscles, joints, and dry skin as part of a holistic wellness routine.
Healing the nervous system rarely comes from a single supplement or therapy. True healing comes from nourishing the entire person through whole foods, restorative sleep, stress reduction, movement, medicinal plants, healthy relationships, and thoughtful use of cannabis cultivars.
Every healthy choice sends your nervous system the message that it is safe to repair, adapt, and restore balance.
Nature has always provided remarkable tools for healing. Our job is simply to learn how to use them wisely.
