Legends have their defining moments. Cheech & Chong attended the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards to recognize the Red Hot Chili Peppers as MTV Global Icons.

The band, like Lenny Kravitz, is a fan of the stoner comedy pair. The relationship is mainly geographical: the Chili Peppers and Cheech Marin are from Los Angeles. Tommy Chong is a Calgary native who has lived in Los Angeles since the early 1970s.

After the band performed "Bad Summer," lead vocalist Anthony Kiedis called Cheech & Chong "some bad motherfuckers," which was bleeped out of his acceptance speech.

Chong's introduction included two curses. He messed up the script and apologized, "I fucked up, I'm sorry," before improvising, "Whenever I think of the band, you know, I think of somebody putting a sock on (bleeped)."

Chong had saved his most incredible line for last. Snoop Dogg and Eminem collaborated on their smokin' hot high single, "From The D to The LBC," which opened with Snoop popping an extensive phony joint just before Cheech & Chong standing in the audience explaining why the Chili Peppers were being honored.

"We just came here because we smelled that previous performance," Chong explained. "It had a Snoop Dogg scent about it."

"Because it was Snoop Dogg, buddy," Marin explained.

"Oh, yeah, even better," Chong answered.
