Planting and growing cannabis in Oklahoma is a serious matter that involves legalities and laws to consider. Even the number of pants to grow is also prescribed and needs to be strictly followed.

A Brief History

In 2018, Oklahoma became the 3oth state to legalize medical marijuana (1). But it was a rough and tough road towards its legalization.

Back in as early as 1933 Oklahoma is known to have some of the strictest marijuana laws in the United States. It outlawed all forms of marijuana, regardless of its said health benefits.

By the year 1983, Oklahoma introduced a program that aimed to eliminate marijuana in the state.

Things to consider before growing cannabis in Oklahoma

Although growing cannabis in Oklahoma is not far-fetched from growing common crops or plants, which involves meeting their basic needs, there are still several key factors a grower should keep in mind if he decides to grow cannabis.

  • Your reason for growing cannabis is medical related, either you are a patient who needs and was recommended to use medical marijuana, or you are a patient’s caregiver.

  • You should have a license.

How many marijuana plants can I grow?

As stated in Section 1 A.3 and 4 of the State Question 788 (7), an individual can (A.3) legally possess six (6) mature cannabis, and (A.4) legally possess six (6) seedling plants.

Yes, this means a licensed patient or their caregiver may legally possess six mature marijuana plants and six seedling plants; mature plants are flowering plants, while seedlings are non-flowering. You are allowed each so that you may maintain a continuous growth cycle of your medical marijuana in Oklahoma.

How should I care for my plants?

Since you are really decided to grow cannabis, here are some guidelines or steps on the proper care of your plants. (8)

Step 1: Choose the best place to grow.

You have two options: you can grow indoor or outdoor.

Step 2: Choose Your Grow Light

The lighting you provide your cannabis will of course depend on the place where you grow your plant. If you choose indoors, you may use grow lights either LED or LEC, or other household lights available. If you choose to grow them outdoors, the most available light is the sun.

Step 3: Choose Your Growing Medium

Each growing medium that you can use has different care and watering requirements. You can choose from the following: soil, soilless mix, hydroponic (direct in water), or aeroponic (suspended in misted air).

Step 4: Choose Your Nutrients

Plants are like humans; they also need some nutritional supplements. Choose the best, affordable, and most available nutrients you can get.

Step 5: Get Your Cannabis Plants (& Choose Your Strain)

Get your seeds from trusted sources to ensure a good quality plant. Your yield and product quality always start from your seeds!

Step 6: Germinate Cannabis Seeds

One popular way to germinate your cannabis seeds is through the Paper Towel Method. All you need is a paper towel, water, 2 plates, and of course the seeds. This will also help your seed and plant acclimate to your surrounding property.

Step 7: Grow Your Plant Big and Strong

This is the vegetative stage when the seedling begins to grow more leaves. Let them grow big and strong, as to establish them and prep them to bud and flower. In this period, you need to monitor the temperature. The plants will grow better if it is warmer, around 70-85°F (20-30°C). give 18-24 hours of light a day when it is indoor, and direct light from 10 AM to 4 PM or more when outdoor.

Step 8: Flowering Stage

This is the stage where your plants start making buds. This stage will last until harvest! During this stage, you will need to change to 12-12 Light Schedule, identify the gender of cannabis plants, and get rid of any males.

Step 9: Harvest Your Weed

Yes, it is time to harvest medical marijuana! But how do we know if it’s the right time to harvest your cannabis plants in Oklahoma?

  1. Wait until your buds stop growing new, white hairs. By this point, your buds should be fragrant (the whole grow room or area will likely smell strongly of cannabis), plump, and ‘filled out’.

  2. Wait until at least 40% of the white hairs have changed color (darkened) and are curling in. This marks the beginning of the harvest window. Buds harvested now will have more of a speedy effect and are not at full potency.

  3. Harvest when 50-70% of the hairs have darkened for the highest THC levels

  4. Harvest when 80-90% of the hairs have darkened for more a couchlock, anti-anxiety effect (some of the THC has turned into the more relaxing CBN)

Step 10: Dry and Cure Your Newly Harvested Buds

After you have cut off and trimmed all of your glittery, beautiful fat buds, you will want to hang them upside down in a cool, dark place with plenty of ventilation so that they can dry out.

Are you ready to plant now that you have a clear number of cannabis plants that you can grow in Oklahoma?
