In order to select the operators of five new medical marijuana dispensaries in Rhode Island, a lottery has been scheduled before the end of October.
In order to ensure fairness in the process, the lottery was scheduled. It will be public and live-streamed using numbered balls from the state Lottery. Numbers will be picked by a blindfolded former FBI agent from a transparent tumbler borrowed from Twin River Casino. This is according to the Department of Business Regulations Office of Cannabis Regulation.
There are twenty-three companies that have pre-approved submitted applications for the right to open a dispensary in five zones across the state. Some companies submitted their applications for more than just one zone.
A lottery to select a dispensary for a sixth zone in the Newport area will not be held because one company that was disqualified from the process has appealed.
Rhode Island currently has only three marijuana dispensaries. Those are dispensaries in Providence, Portsmouth, and Warwick. In 2019, there was approval from the state lawmakers to increase or expand the number of dispensaries to nine in order to improve access and increase competition.
