Helping Hemp: Pennsylvania Awards $400K To Support Industry Education

A student-led STEM initiative aimed at promoting and marketing the many uses of industrial hemp will receive a significant boost from the grant. The funds will be used to develop a comprehensive curriculum for engaging in hemp production, management, and cultivation, with applications in food, fiber, fuel, industrial, and personal care products.

In 2020, Pennsylvania's Departments of Agriculture and Education revealed an exciting initiative to teach K-12 students about sustainable plastic made from hemp. Last year, the Florida Agriculture Department organized an essay contest for students in grades 5-11. The aim was to pique their interest in the hemp industry and showcase innovative ways of using the crop.

Pennsylvania is set to award an additional $56,000 to the Pennsylvania Industrial Hemp Council to launch a campaign that advocates for the benefits of hemp and paves way for new markets that can utilize hemp-based products.

It states, "The council is building a dynamic collaboration among farmers and other businesses, investors, government agencies, and communities to bring hemp back to Pennsylvania’s farms."

The U.S. Ecological Advanced Research & Conservation Hub's Hemp Certificate Program for Disadvantaged Communities (USEARCH) is set to receive $20,500 to create an educational initiative targeting underprivileged communities, namely youth, veterans, and women, providing them with an opportunity to participate in the hemp industry.

Last year, the agriculture department declared its search for proposals that can receive funding of up to $200,000, which can be matched, for marketing initiatives that aim to enhance the hemp industry in the state.
